Music is all around us, it benefits us more than we really realize, but how exactly does it help our well-being?

There are different kinds of music for all tastes - jazz, pop, classical, folk, rock, rap, punk, blues, country, just to name a few. Music is very personal and effects everyone in different ways. Different parts of the body resonates to different sounds and pitches. Certain kinds of music can powerfully effect the human spirit or soul.

We share with you how music helps you in everyday life. How much of this did you know was helped by simply listening to music?

  • Music Heals - It can be used as a pain relief, putting you at ease physically and mentally (Used in hospitals, known as Music Therapy). Can attribute to lower blood pressure, boost immunity and can even be a migraine remedy! 
  • Music and the brain - Been known to enhance higher brain functions and help you learn better, as well as help with recalling a memory (non-vocal music helps you recall events better, where as vocal music can have you recalling the lyrics instead of events).
  • Music and Physical Abilities - It gets you motivated and passionate if it’s a song or type of music you like, hence why people have their headphones in while they exercise. Music therapy is also used during physical rehabilitation to help develop, maintain and restore physical mobility.
  • Music and work - Listening to music in the work place or while you are studying is known to make you work more productively, certain genres of music can even have you remember symbols and letters easier and faster than others.
  • Music and moods - Relaxing music can help relieve insomnia, stress, blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, nerves and anxiety. Classical music is proven to be a stress reliever for anyone from the elderly to newborns (hence why lullaby’s are closely similar to classical music). Proven to drive creativity and help reduce depression, music someone enjoys helps release a chemical in the brain (dopamine) that makes you feel better than other music would.

The key is to become aware of how different music affects your feelings, thoughts, behaviours and self-esteem. Create a few playlists for different emotions like "music to energise me" or "my happy music". 

Listen to your favourite music when you wake up in the morning and while getting ready for the day. It will make you feel happy, reduce stress levels and help beat the winter blues.
